Addiction-related difficulties

Cycles in which a substance or behaviour brings short-term relief but makes life more difficult over time.

How can it be experienced?

With addiction-related difficulties, a person may repeatedly use a substance, behaviour or habit for short-term relief, escape or pleasure; over time, the costs may grow in relationships, health or daily life.

How can it be addressed in therapy?

One important sign of addiction is the development of tolerance: needing more, more often or with greater intensity to obtain the same effect or pleasure as before. Therapy can explore triggers, emotional needs, the addiction cycle and links with past experiences.
